where peace voters & peace candidates meet
From Cindy Sheehan & our friends at VotersForPeace ...
In April, VotersForPeace created a new board of directors to guide our efforts going forward. We were honored that Cindy Sheehan, Rev. Lennox Yearwood, David Swanson, Tina Richards, Ret. Colonel Anne Wright, Kevin Zeese, and Kevin Martin agreed to serve (See their bios here). At our recent strategy session, we asked, "How can we make peace voters as powerful as possible, especially given the overwhelming majority of Americans who want an end to the US occupation?" We discussed the difficulty faced by peace voters who felt that they did not always have a desirable choice when it came to voting for peace: Peace Voters Dilemma we call it.
We cannot endorse candidates or be involved in electoral campaigns as an educational organization, but in light of Cindy Sheehan's announcement this week that she herself plans to be a peace candidate, we thought it was time to share our new initiative:
Should YOU Be a Peace Candidate?
We decided to launch an educational campaign to encourage peace activists to consider becoming peace candidates. We want every peace voter to ask themselves - and other community leaders - the question, "Should YOU Be a Peace Candidate?" We are pulling together basic resources for solving the Peace Voters Dilemma such as a checklist on how to identify a real peace candidate, where peace voters can learn about running for office and how you can recruit candidates in your community.
